Before I say anything about CHM Decoder, I have to say a few words about the CHM format. CHM is the extension for the Microsoft Compiled HTML Help file format; the CHM format is often used for software documentation. Now that that’s out of the way, here’s what you need to know about CHM Decoder: true to its word, it can decode/decompile CHM files. So if you have some CHM files and you need to decompile them, GridinSoft’s CHM Decoder is the tool for you.

Run the CHM Decoder executable and the application will launch. That’s all you have to do to get started with CHM Decoder. You just have to run an executable, you don’t have to go through a lengthy installation process. And that, of course, makes CHM Decoder portable.

There are 3 tabs at the top of CHM Decoder’s interface. The following three tabs:
Open file – from here you can load a CHM file into the application.
Decode – from here you can select the output folder, choose if you want a menu to be generated, and initiate the decoding process.
About – this tab presents the CHM Decoder version you’re using and it tells you that CHM Decoder can decode/decompile CHM files or eBooks and extract all source files.

To use CHM Decoder you only need the first two tabs. Use the Open file tab to load a CHM file; use the Decode tab to pick the output format and to launch the decoding process. If you need visual confirmation that it is very easy to decompile CHM files with CHM Decoder, just take a look at the Quick Look video that accompanies this article.

GridinSoft offers CHM Decoder for the great price of free. Or to put it in other words, CHM Decoder is free software.

CHM Decoder, a free and portable tool from GridinSoft, allows you to easily decompile CHM files.

Pros

CHM Decoder does not have to be installed. CHM Decoder’s interface is very simple. Use CHM Decoder to decompile CHM files. CHM Decoder is free software.

Cons

None that I could think of.
